Dr. Elie G. Haddad
Dean, School of Architecture and Design
Dr. Elie G. Haddad joined LAU as Assistant Professor of Architecture in fall 1994. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2002 and to Full Professor in 2010. He was appointed Dean of the School of Architecture and Design in October 2012.
Haddad holds a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania (1998), a Master of Science in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania (1995), a Master of Science in Architecture from the University of Cincinnati (1991) and a Bachelor of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College (1989).
His research has focused on modern and contemporary architecture. He co-edited A Critical History of Contemporary Architecture (Ashgate, 2014), edited The Contested Territory of Architectural Theory (Routledge, 2022), and published the survey titled Modern Architecture in a Post Modern Era (Lund Humphries, 2023). He has also published several works on architecture in Arabic (Dar al Farabi, 2015 & 2016).
Haddad was initially part of the team that charted the growth of LAU’s Department of Architecture and Design, which he chaired from 2000 to 2005. As Assistant Dean of the School of Engineering and Architecture, he chaired the committee that prepared the proposal to consolidate all art and design programs under the School of Architecture and Design, which was founded in 2009.
Under his leadership as school dean, the school embarked on NASAD accreditation for all its art and design programs, and NAAB accreditation for its architecture program, which were successfully achieved in 2020.
Haddad was elected President of the Association of Arab Architects in 2020 for a three-year term. Under his direction, the association organized lecture series, conferences, and the tri-annual Arab Architects Awards, held in Jordan in 2022, and resumed the publication of the review Al Mimar al Arabi, covering recent developments in architecture and urbanism in the Arab world.
