New Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholars Welcomed at LAU

A total of 62 new scholars from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, the West Bank/Gaza and Yemen have settled into the U.S.-Middle East Partnership Initiative Tomorrow’s Leaders Program (MEPI-TL) at LAU. Comprising undergraduates (TLU), graduates (TLG) and gender scholars (TLS), the new cohort was introduced to the specific requirements of the scholarship and the means of supporting them to maximize their university experience.

HES Scholars Start a New Chapter at LAU

A new cohort of 86 Higher Education Scholars (HES) have settled into an exciting new academic phase at LAU, where they were greeted on August 13 with a warm welcome at orientation. Following the first week of classes, on September 7, the scholars were briefed on the specific requirements of the scholarship, dedicated to helping them make the most of their university experience.

LAU Partners with Colombia to Promote Mental Wellness

On August 29, LAU’s Department of Psychology and Education signed an MOU with the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia to advance initiatives in psychology that benefit the Colombian community. Through this partnership, the department will organize educational activities to raise awareness about the importance of psychology, mental health and healthy living habits, in addition to psychological counseling and emotional support sessions for Colombian nationals.

Alumnus Yasser Abdul Malak Makes Forbes MENA List

Yasser Abdul Malak, a Business Marketing alumnus (BS ’97), is among the top-ranking executives featured in Forbes’ Global Meets Local list for 2024. Since 2022, Abdul Malak has served as Nestlé’s Chairman and CEO for the MENA region overseeing 13,000 people in 19 countries and 24 factories. His 25-year career at Nestlé has included leading roles as CEO for Nestlé’s Northeast Africa Region and as Dairy Category Head for the EMENA zone at Nestlé’s headquarters in Vevey.

Alumnus Hussein Freijeh Ranked by Forbes MENA

Computer Science graduate Hussein Freijeh (BS ’03), vice president and general manager of Snap Inc. MENA, has been ranked in Forbes’ Global Meets Local list for 2024. Freijeh has held key managerial roles at Yahoo and Maktoob Group, focusing on advertising sales and revenue operations, and plays a key role in shaping Snap’s strategic direction and growth. His significant contributions to digital media and technology have made him a prominent figure in the evolving social media landscape.

LAU Partners With LEC

On August 19, LAU signed an MOU with the Lebanese Executives Council (LEC), an independent private-sector-led body that aims to promote professional and social relations among its members across different sectors and countries. The MOU was signed in the presence of former Minister of Information Manal Abdel Samad on the Beirut campus. Under this agreement, LAU and LEC will collaborate toward their shared professional objectives through a commitment to quality higher education, investment in human capital, and creation of opportunities.

New Partnership to Enhance Healthcare

On July 23, LAU’s Academy of Continuing Education (ACE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Partners and Beyond, a management consulting firm offering a range of professional services, in the presence of Dr. Firass Abiad, caretaker minister of Public Health, on the Beirut campus. Under this agreement, ACE and Partners and Beyond will conduct specialized programs and courses for healthcare professionals on management and leadership development, digital transformation, and project management in healthcare.

SOE Joins Engineering Schools Network for Sustainability

The LAU School of Engineering has joined the Mediterranean Network of Engineering and Management School, a global, non-profit, membership-driven organization dedicated to improving engineering and management education and addressing sustainability-related issues in the Mediterranean region. Recognized by UNESCO, the 150+ member network across 23 countries offers a unique forum for information and debate on innovation and best practices. Its activities include workshops and seminars, research programs and projects, and students’ cultural events.

LAU’s Business School Makes Headlines

The Adnan Kassar School of Business (AKSOB) was the cover story in the May 2024 edition of Higher Education Digest, a global platform showcasing distinguished universities. The feature highlighted the school’s diverse offerings, commitment to innovation, global impact, industry connections and international accreditations. “Our consistent recognition as a national leader in Business and Economics underscores AKSOB’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and global impact,” commented Dr. Wassim Shahin, dean of AKSOB.

LAU’s Own Elected Olympic Ambassador for Lebanon

Mohamad Mawas (BS’16), Lead Athletics Coordinator and Teams Manager of the LAU Athletics Department, has been elected by the Lebanese Olympic Committee as the Olympic Ambassador for Lebanon for the 2024 Paris Olympics year. Last June, Mawas joined his fellow ambassadors from all over the world at the International Olympic Academy in Olympia, Greece, where they exchanged ideas about the legacy of the games and the crucial role sports play in promoting peace and human dignity.
