In order to foster the development of students’ writing skills as well as promoting a writing culture on campus, the departments of English Language Instruction (DELI) and Humanities collaborated to organize, last month, a creative writing competition for the students of English. Their task was to write a poem, an essay or a short story with the title “The Train We Left Behind.” The Writing Center played a vital role in assisting the students with developing their proposals. The committee, consisting of Dr. Rula Diab, DELI chairperson, Paula Habre, director of the Writing Center and instructors Samira Shami and Shadi Shidrawi, evaluated the final works and decided on the winners: Jamil Kazma (first prize), Marianna Khayat (second prize) and Saeed Bayoun (third prize) who received an iPad and two iPods respectively.
“Being a business student, I never had the opportunity to try my hand at creative writing. I truly hope more students will enjoy this experience equally in the future,” said Khayat. Based on the success of this competition, DELI intends to make the creative writing competition available to all undergraduate students in the coming academic year.
