LAU officials met with Dr. Najib El-Khatib on July 2 to sign an agreement to establish, in his late father’s name, the Mounir Khatib Endowment Scholarship Fund and the Mounir Khatib Endowed Engineering Lecture Series.
Dr. Mounir El-Khatib was a professor and a well-known Lebanese civil engineer.
“Today, we are memorializing a great man, the late professor Mounir El-Khatib, and commemorating the commitment he had for knowledge,” said LAU President Dr. Joseph G. Jabbra at the signing ceremony.
The Mounir Khatib Endowment Scholarship Fund will support the education of underprivileged but academically promising students wishing to enroll at LAU.
“I think it is important to relate the business of engineering to an academic institution of the highest standards such as LAU,” said Najib El-Khatib, who has been associated with the university as a member of its Board of International Advisors.
The Mounir Khatib Endowed Engineering Lecture Series will establish a series of professional lectures and seminars for students and interested professionals, addressing topics not typically covered in structured lecture courses.
“The university and I jointly decided to create this lecture series, which will promote continuing education, and expose young students to new ideas. The series will open their eyes to things going on beyond the campus walls,” Najib El-Khatib said.
“My father was first and foremost a scholar. Education was very important to him and remained central in his heart and mind,” El-Khatib added.
An engineering graduate from Michigan University, Dr. Mounir El-Khatib taught for over 17 years at the American University of Beirut, and established in 1959 what would become Khatib & Alami, a leading multidisciplinary architectural and engineering consulting firm.
“His family, his country and the region lost him in 2010, but his legacy shall live on,” said his son at the signing ceremony.
